Women's Health is Beyond Politics

	Dear Friend, We are continuing the battle to maintain access to healthcare for women in New Jersey.  As you may know, Governor Christie callously vetoed a bi-partisan bill passed in the Senate and Assembly that would have restored $7.5 million in funding for women's health services across this state, without increasing the state budget one dime. In fact, his veto will cost us money - for every $1 we don't fund, we will spend an additional $4. The Governor claims his veto was purely a fiscal decision and the state cannot afford this program.  Yet, after the non-partisan Office of Legislative Services identified money in the Governor’s budget to offset the costs, the administration failed to appear and defend their claims at a Senate hearing on these essential services.  This lack of response makes clear that this is a false ideological decision, not a budgetary one. As we wrote in a letter to our colleagues, contrary to the claims of some of the most vocal opponents of this legislation, the funding would only have been used to provide women's health services for the uninsured including pap smears, pre- and post-natal care, birth control and cancer screenings. Despite our opponents attempt to spin this issue into something it's not, none of this funding would pay for abortions. Sadly, studies have shown however, that without these services, abortions will actually increase in New Jersey. No other Governor in the country has targeted women in this manner.  He's using women's healthcare to court the far right of his party by denying women the full range of family planning and reproductive services they need. We have been joined in our efforts by the New Jersey League of Women Voters, the Women's Political Caucus, Women Advocating for Good Government, the Health Professional and Allied Employees, the American Association of University Women, the National Council of Jewish Women, the March of Dimes and Catholics for Choice.  Despite that opposition to the veto, Republican Legislators have been bowing to the strong arm tactics of their Governor, instead of standing up for the women they represent.  Their opposition to vital women's health care is not only shortsighted and foolish, but threatens to cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in the months ahead.                                                           We need your help to fight back! Help Override Chris Christie's veto

Take a stand against Chris Christie's huge tax cut for millionaires and for restoration of property tax rebates for senior and disabled homeowners in your town. Democrats cleaning up Chris Christie's mess

Backing down from weeks of pressure from Democrats in the legislature and citizens around New Jersey, last week Governor Christie announced that he was going to restore funding for prescription assistance for New Jersey's seniors. Ironically it was federal funding and policy changes from President Obama's Health Care Reform that provided the money for the restoration of these benefits. Now Democrats in Washington are hoping to help ease the pain of another of Chris Christie's taxes on the middle class, the huge fare hikes he has imposed on NJ Transit. The nearly 900,000 riders of NJ Transit trains and buses are facing up to a 64 per cent increase in their fares and a dramatically longer commute with 31 trains being placed out of service. That's right – Steve Lonegan held a rally Tuesday to support Chris Christie's radical decision to remove Justice John Wallace from the state supreme court. Never mind that the decision was an unprecedented slap in the face to a Supreme Court with a long recognized national reputation for excellence and independence. Never mind that the decision will politicize the New Jersey court system and have a chilling effect on the independence of the entire judicial system in New Jersey and the trust and faith that our residents have that judges are appointed on their merits, not their politics. Talking points vs Real Priorities

With his poll numbers dropping and editorial pages across the state calling him out on his backward priorities, Governor Christie's administration is doing everything it can to distract New Jersey voters from the middle class crunching cuts and property tax increases he has proposed. No one is disputing that we are in a tough budget situation and action is needed. But the Governor continually tells us his budget imposes shared sacrifice on everyone in New Jersey, yet approximately 42,000 people who make over $400,000 will pay thousands of dollars less in taxes than they did last year. The rest of us are left with crippling property tax increases as a result of the cuts to our local schools and towns. As many as 134,000 low income seniors will have to pay an additional $310 for their prescription drug plans in addition to a doubling of their co-pay. After a week of legislative hearings where many of these budget fallacies were exposed Christie and his treasurer had a new talking point, that Democrats were trying to make a 'political issue' out of the tax increase. If Chris Christie thinks priorities like protecting poor and disabled seniors, supporting families struggling to pay their property taxes and keeping our class sizes at rational levels is a 'political issue' he couldn't be more wrong. To make matters worse, at the same time he is taking money out of our pockets, he wants to send tens of millions of dollars back to Washington by refusing federal matching funds for after-school programs, homeland security and library funding amongst others.
