The NJDSC Week In Review For October 28, 2011

retweetthis.png

Welcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

Weekend Watching

  • Chairman Wisniewski will appear on News 12's Power and Politics this weekend talking about Chris Christie's continued assault on New Jersey's independent judiciary. Check your local listings for viewing times in your area.

Vote by Mail

  • In New Jersey, any voter can now vote by mail in any election. You do not need a reason to Vote by Mail. Don't feel like going to the polls? Simply vote by mail. Now there is "no excuse" not to vote! The deadline to Vote by Mail is November 1. You can get a vote by mail application here.
  • Star Ledger: N.J. residents can still vote by mail-in ballot in upcoming election.

Christie Continues Assault on Independent Judiciary

  • Chairman Wisniewski Op-Ed: "You don’t need to disagree with the governor’s position on the law in question to believe that his comments amount to character assassination and unjustly impugn the integrity of a judge simply because he disagrees with her ruling. It is the latest in a series of attacks by Christie on the judicial branch of government, unprecedented since New Jersey’s current state constitution was ratified more than 60 years ago."
  • Speaker Oliver: "Taxpayers are sick and tired of awful political theater like this, especially while they continue to suffer from Gov. Christie’s property tax hikes and his continued failure to improve the economy..."
  • Star Ledger Editorial: The governor should calm down, apologize and put the hammer away.
  • Guest Opinion: NJ Gov. Chris Christie shows troubling willingness to undercut court's integrity.
  • The Record Editorial: The governor’s rhetoric on this issue is unhelpful. He has called the state’s judiciary "elitists" and has suggested that judges are seeking to stand apart from mere mortals. We do not agree with Feinberg’s opinion. But are all judges in New Jersey "elitists" just because the governor disagrees with an opinion rendered by one judge? That’s a tough argument to make.

Christie's Cuts - Higher property taxes, fewer cops in NJ

  • Asbury Park Press: Christie's Cuts - Higher property taxes, fewer cops in NJ -"...the bad news is, many residents have seen municipal services cut as their taxes have continued to climb. Cities and suburbs all over New Jersey have laid off police officers and other public employees in the last 12 months as a drop in state aid and lingering economic doldrums have put the squeeze on municipal finances."
  • Gannett: South Jersey legal services cut as needs rise.

After Christie's Budget Cuts, NJ After 3 To Cease Operations

  • Associated Press: Budget cuts force closure of N.J. non-proft that funded after school programs.
  • NJ Spotlight: New Jersey After 3, the statewide program that funded afterschool for thousands of New Jersey students, has told sponsors and supporters that it will cease operations next week. In an email yesterday, New Jersey After 3 president and chief executive Mark Valli said the final blow was the elimination of the last $3 million in state funding under Gov. Chris Christie's 2012 budget.
  • New Jersey Newsroom: N.J. After 3 student supervision programs to end next week with loss of funding.
  • Think Progress: Gov. Chris Christie’s Budget Cuts Eliminate After-School Education For 15,000 Poor Children.
  • Assemblywoman Watson Coleman discussed the ramifications of the announced insolvency of NJ After 3, following the elimination of its state funding by Governor Christie in his most recent budget. (Video)
  • Speaker Oliver: "Governor Christie has some explaining to do to the working families who are losing this valuable program and now facing unnecessary uncertainty as to the safety and educational future of their children..."
  • Assemblyman Diegnan: "The program is one of the most effective examples we have of putting taxpayer dollars to good use. According to an independent three-year study, with each dollar invested in an at-risk child, there is a return of approximately $9 to $12. In addition, the program has leveraged more than $31 million in matching cash contributions and in-kind support since 2004. I simply can’t understand how the governor can sit back and ignore these facts. Our children are our future. Eliminating funding for this program is both shortsighted and hurtful."
  • Assemblywoman Stender: "NJ After 3 was the best example of a joint partnership the state could hope for. Not only did it protect children by providing a safe environment for kids after school, but it leveraged taxpayer dollars to secure corporate support. It is beyond unfortunate that the children of working-class families have to be the latest casualty in the Governor's budget all so he can stand with millionaires to preserve their tax breaks. The deeper we get into this fiscal year, the more we see the real-life ramifications of this budget playing out."
  • Assemblyman Moriarty: "This is a prime example of the Governor's callous indifference to the plight of working class families in New Jersey."
  • The Record Editorial: The message out of Trenton to low-income families is, "You get no help here." The message to taxpayers is, "To save a lousy $3 million, we’re willing to put families and society at risk."

Senator Menendez Launches New Website And Campaign Video

  • Associated Press: Senator Robert Menendez launches website, video ahead of 2012 campaign.
  • PolitickerNJ: Menendez launches campaign website, new video.
  • Video: Alicia & Rob dish about their dad, Senator Menendez.

Christie's Broken Promises To Cities

  • Courier Post: As a conservative candidate for governor, Chris Christie visited New Jersey's deeply liberal and severely impoverished urban areas. He filmed a campaign ad at Camden's infamous Tent City homeless encampment. And he released a list of 11 policy promises for "bringing back New Jersey's cities." But nearly two years into his term, the Republican governor has fulfilled only one of those promises and has not publicly prioritized the others. As many as four tent cities exist in Camden, hungry children are increasingly visiting the city's main soup kitchen, and the depleted police force struggles to fight rising crime. Christie's budgetary priorities tell a different story. After-school programming for about 3,500 mostly poor New Jersey children was cut, taking with it five programs in Camden, nine in Newark, and one in Gloucester City, according to the nonprofit NJ After 3. Christie has slashed funding for legal aid for low-income residents and reduced the earned-income tax credit for the working poor. And state-funded nonprofit groups that handle social services, foreclosure counseling, and urban redevelopment say dealing with the administration has grown harder.

  • Senator Lautenberg statement after the House Judiciary Committee passed legislation that would make it easier for people to carry concealed weapons: “This bill would put families, cops, and communities across the country in danger.  Instead of putting the interests of the gun lobby first, the House should be working to protect the safety of our citizens.  We need common sense gun laws that prevent violence, not laws that make it easier to carry concealed weapons anywhere and everywhere throughout the country. This bill is an egregious threat to our communities and just another attempt by the gun lobby to put its radical agenda ahead of our safety and security.”

  • Congressman Rothman was a keynote speaker at a Solidarity Gathering hosted at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades by the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey in honor of the freed Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit. The NJDSC Week In Review For October 21, 2011

retweetthis.png

Welcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

Christie Takes Credit For Democratic Tax Cut That Republicans Opposed

  • Philadelphia Inquirer: Workers in New Jersey will see a slight reduction in taxes taken out of their paychecks next year thanks to a Democratic bill signed — and now touted — by Republican Gov. Christie... but he didn’t mention that the bill that led to the cut was introduced by Democrats with full Democratic backing over “no” votes from 34 Republicans in the Legislature.
  • Chairman Wisniewski on Chris Christie trying to take credit for a Democratic tax cut that a majority of Legislative Republicans opposed: "Maybe the governor should support some of the Democratic candidates that helped make this payroll tax relief possible, instead of the Republicans who stood in the way. Yet, the governor’s embrace of our progressive idea still doesn’t change the cold fact that this he has done next to nothing for New Jerseyans who under his leadership haven’t been able to find a job that would allow them to get a paycheck and enjoy this tax break in the first place."
  • Senator Turner: "Even if we had to wait three months for the official announcement, it is still good news to see Gov. Christie highlighting the payroll-tax cut that Sen. [Fred] Madden and I sponsored. The governor's ability to tout ideas that were developed by others, including those from different political parties, is a positive sign that he is heeding our call to work on the economy."
  • Senator Madden: “Cutting payroll taxes is a fantastic way to provide a much needed break for middle class families.  I am glad that Governor Christie has decided to embrace the concept put forward by myself and Senator Turner earlier this year. The governor’s willingness to use Democrat’s ideas and principles in order to get our economy moving again is certainly welcome.   It shows, I hope, his willingness to work with us on the dozens of bills we passed recently dealing with the economy."
  • Assemblyman Milam: “This is outstanding news for New Jersey workers who have long deserved this tax break. Working class New Jerseyans struggling to make ends meet need any help they can get. That’s why I sponsored this bill and pushed it into law and am so pleased to see New Jersey families will soon enjoy its benefits. Helping workers should always be our priority.”

Women's services hit hard by Christie's cuts

  • Gannett continued their series examining the impact of Christie's budget cuts, this time looking at women's health: Christie cut $7.5 million from the $1.2 billion fiscal 2010 budget for the Department of Health and Senior Services and that line item, which funded centers throughout the state, has never been restored. That money previously funded women’s health and family planning services at 58 medical centers statewide. “To date, six of 58 family planning health centers have closed so far as a result of the state cut,”
  • East Camden resident Laura Lopez, 31, an unemployed single mother of four children, ages 4 to 11, said she received prenatal care during her last two pregnancies, and relies on the organization for her children’s health. “I don’t know any other facilities that offer help”

No Place In Public Discourse For Mitsch's Demeaning Comments About Women

  • Philadelphia Inquirer: N.J. Senate candidate defends controversial tweet.
  • Burlington County Times: GOP's Phil Mitsch under attack over Twitter posts.
  • PolitickerNJ: Mitsch tweet flap gets stranger.
  • Chairman Wisniewski offered this reaction: “It goes without saying that there is no place in public discourse for the demeaning comments made by Republican Senate candidate Phil Mitsch about women. It is an embarrassment to all of New Jersey that he has been allowed to represent the Republican Party as a candidate for a major public office. Republicans appear to be piling it on with this latest insult to women, who have quickly found themselves victims of Chris Christie’s agenda. As Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, I call on Governor Christie and all New Jersey Republicans to repudiate this rhetoric and call for Phil Mitsch’s immediate withdrawal from this race.”
  • Assemblywoman Lampitt and Senator Beach hold a press conference condeming GOP extremist politician Phil Mitsch for his remarks equating women to prostitutes. (Video)
  • Democratic Assembly candidate Gabriela “Gabby” Mosquera and Assemblyman Paul Moriarty renewed their calls for Republican challenger Shelley Lovett to come out of hiding and tell 6th District Senate candidate Phil Mitsch – under fire for sexually fueled and misogynistic messages on his Twitter feed – to exit the race.
  • The Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey condemned the remarks made by 6th District State Senate Candidate Phil Mitsch as misogynistic and completely inappropriate for a New Jersey candidate for elected office.

Christie Continues Assault on Independent Judiciary

  • The Record: Judge attacked by Christie no stranger to high-profile, politically charged cases.
  • Stile: Christie used smear to put heat on judges.
  • New Jersey State Bar Association president Susan A. Feeney said in a statement that Christie has a history of trying to "intimidate the courts and unduly influence the judicial process."
  • Star Ledger: Gov. Chris Christie must apologize for attack on judge.

On the Trail

Congressional Corner

  • New Jersey's two U.S. senators have joined the effort to posthumously award suffragist Alice Paul the Congressional Gold Medal. Senators Menendez and Lautenberg introduced a resolution in the Senate to grant Paul the medal, which is considered the "highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions," according to the Officer of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Senator Lautenberg blasted Senate Republicans for again voting down a middle-class jobs bill and blocking the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act.  This is the second jobs bill that Republicans voted down in the last two weeks.  Last week Republicans blocked President Obama’s American Jobs Act.
  • ‎Senator Menendez spoke on the Senate floor about putting teachers and first responders back to work. (Video)
  • Senator Lautenberg on President Obama's Iraq troop withdrawal announcement: “Our troops have fought valiantly for nearly nine years and should be honored for their service, but the time for them to come home is long overdue.  The war in Iraq was a costly mission that claimed too many precious lives and wounded thousands of our nation’s brave men and women in uniform.  I am pleased that President Obama has decided to bring this war to an end and I will continue working to ensure our service members and veterans have the resources and support they need while they are deployed and when they return home.”
  • Members and supporters turned for a ground breaking at the site of what will be the new home of East Vineland Volunteer Fire Company No. 2. The 13,800-square-foot station will hold both fire trucks and the Emergency Medical Service’s equipment. New Jersey Director of Rural Development Henderson stressed the difficulty of getting the money for the project, crediting Senators Lautenberg and Menendez.
  • At Jersey City school, Senator Menendez hails Senate approval for spending $693M on autism research.
  • While touring the new headquarters of a life sciences company that got its start thanks to a billion-dollar incentive program he championed, Senator Menendez said he's hopeful that program can be expanded.
  • Congressman Payne visited Bahrain with Congressman Eni Faleomavaega and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and stressed the importance of promoting democracy by co-opting all people and institutions, instead of seeking to impose individual visions or resorting to non-peaceful means.
  • Congressman Andrews joined with his colleagues to reintroduce H.R. 3178, the Employee Misclassification Prevention Act. This bill was also included among recommendations sent yesterday by the Democratic Members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction (the “Super Committee”), which is charged with identifying trillions in federal savings.
  • Bridgewater Council Candidate Mary Pranzatelli interviewed Congressman Holt at the Somerville Elks. (Video)

  • Congressman Holt was peppered with a wide range of questions — from economic issues to education to congressional redistricting — by a standing-room-only crowd at a town hall-style forum at the Lawrence Township Municipal Building Monday night. Congressman Holt listened and offered answers to the crowd of nearly 100 people, most of who appeared to be residents of Lawrence, Ewing and Hopewell townships.
  • MyCentralJersey.com: Leonard Lance, Rodney Frelinghuysen face heat in ads for votes on clean-air environmental bills.
  • Congressman Rothman announced that New Jersey Transit has received a grant of more than $4.6 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to make improvements at the Frank R. Lautenberg Secaucus Junction Station.

Under the Dome

  • NJ Today: The Dowdell Library Foundation of South Amboy raised hundreds of dollars in donations through a dunking booth at the South Amboy Street Fair to purchase an online software teaching center that will provide coaching for SAT, AP, GED, and citizenship tests as well as job search and workplace skills. The booth was made possible thanks to donations from State Assemblyman John Wisniewski.
  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3466/3301686785_f01743db35_m.jpgSenator Whelan announced he intends to introduce legislation designed to give a break to disabled New Jersey’s veterans and Purple Heart recipients, and a second bill to give residents the opportunity to honor a fallen service member.
  • Speaker Oliver and Assemblywoman Watson Coleman joined groups representing minorities in New Jersey appealing to Gov. Chris Christie to make the state Supreme Court more diverse.
  • Senator Whelan announced plans to introduce legislation, which would ensure that no individual in need of emergency assistance is denied as a result of their inability to answer the door. The bill would provide civil liability protections to emergency personnel and first responders --including both paid and volunteer police, fire and EMT workers -- who must forcibly enter a location during a rescue call.

  • Legislation that would officially create the New Jersey Business Action Center has cleared the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

The NJDSC Week In Review For October 14, 2011

retweetthis.png

Welcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

Republicans Continue To Play Politics As Democrats Fight To Create Jobs

  • A majority of U.S. Senators voted to proceed with consideration of the American Jobs Act. However, despite the fact that this legislation incorporates ideas that Republicans have previously supported, there was not a single Republican who voted for the bill tonight. Rather, they voted to block consideration of the American Jobs Act. Leading economic experts have stated that the bill will lead to economic growth and create almost two million
jobs – and that’s why Americans are supporting the bipartisan, reasonable ideas in the American Jobs Act.
  • Chairman Wisniewski on the American Jobs Act vote: “It’s essential that we get people back to work and put money back in the pockets of middle class families and small businesses. The Senate must take this critical step forward and pass the American Jobs Act to help middle class families get ahead, keep teachers in the classroom and police and firefighters on the beat, and put construction workers on the job rebuilding America’s crumbling schools, bridges, and roads. It’s time for Republicans in Congress to vote for what’s best for the country, not their political party because for Americans looking for work, there is no time for delay.”
  • Senator Lautenberg slammed Senate Republicans for filibustering legislation to create jobs and grow the country’s economy.  Majority Leader Reid brought up President Obama’s American Jobs Act for a vote in the Senate, but Republicans voted it down and prevented the Senate from even debating it. “Instead of standing with middle-class Americans who are struggling to find work, Republicans have abandoned them by voting down this common-sense job creation bill. It is outrageous that Republicans continue to protect the wealthiest Americans from sharing in the sacrifice that is necessary to lift the economy.  This bill would put millions of Americans back to work and reduce taxes for individuals and small businesses that hire workers.  It’s time for Republicans to stop blocking progress and join Democrats in our mission to create jobs now.”
  • Senator Menendez offered this reaction to the Republican obstruction: “While an overwhelming majority of Democrats stood up for middle class families who are struggling, not a single Republican was willing to put aside partisan politics on behalf of their futures. And while I’m incredibly disappointed, I’m really not surprised.  The GOP has made only one job their main target – President Obama’s. Their political strategy to oppose anything related to the president – at the expense of our economy -- makes no sense. "
  • Congressman Holt joined The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC to discuss the promise of federal R&D for creating new jobs. (Video)
  • Committed to getting the state’s economy moving again, the Senate cleared several pieces of legislation out of the Budget and Appropriations Committee that will spur job creation and help small businesses grow in New Jersey. In the coming weeks, the Senate will be examining further measures that can help get New Jersey’s economy moving again.
  • Senator Linda Greenstein has re-introduced legislation that would allow New Jersey's unemployed to receive on-the-job training to learn new skills and find employment. The "Back to Work NJ Program Act" would pair unemployed workers with New Jersey businesses in a six-week training program.

Christie Property Tax Rhetoric Can’t Change The Facts Of His Record

  • Chairman Wisniewski reacted to Chris Christie's campaign property tax tour: “Chris Christie may be entitled to his own opinion, but he certainly is not entitled to his own facts. And no matter how strong his rhetoric, he can’t change the facts of his record. As governor, he gave a tax cut to New Jersey’s 16,000 millionaires while middle class, senior, and disabled homeowners saw their property taxes rise. Media reports have highlighted how the typical property tax bill in many South Jersey municipalities increased by more than 25%. Homeowners need relief from their increased tax burden, not politically motivated press conferences by the Governor.”
  • Philadelphia Inquirer: Democrat Troy Singleton, a former Assembly staff member running with Assemblyman Herb Conaway, said Christie, as leader of his party, had the right to campaign in the district. But he referred to a 2010 budget proposal by Keenan that he said raised taxes in Mount Laurel. It was therefore "a bit peculiar that the governor was in Mount Laurel talking about this very topic," Singleton said.

Upcoming Voting Deadlines

  • If you're not yet registered to vote, visit this link to make sure you get your application in before the October 18th deadline. Election Day in New Jersey this year is Tuesday, November 8 for state, county, and local offices.

  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez joined 14 colleagues in urging the Obama administration to quickly implement administrative reforms to help millions of responsible homeowners refinance and take advantage of today’s record low interest rates.  With interest rates at an all-time low of 3.94 percent, the Senators encouraged federal housing regulators to take immediate steps to lower the barriers that have kept borrowers trapped in higher interest loans as well as to address other hurdles that have limited the success of current refinance programs.
  • Senator Menendez called the visit of Latin American Foreign Ministers with Syria’s President Assad an endorsement of “autocracy, oppression, and tyranny.”
  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez asked President Obama to issue a federal disaster declaration for 12 New Jersey counties in response to the severe damage caused by Tropical Storm Lee.  Last month, the state requested a disaster declaration for some of these counties, but it recently expanded the request to include a total of 12.
  • Congressman Pallone announced since January 1, 2011 he has successfully secured over one million dollars on behalf of constituents in the form of disability back pay, social security payments, mortgage modifications, hurricane disaster aid and more. • Congressman Payne met with ATAA representatives at his Washington D.C office. ATAA was represented by Past President Gunay Evinch, Trustee Oya Bain, Civic Engagement Director Yenal Kucuker and Ridvan Sezer – representing the New Jersey Turkish American community. • Congressman Andrews is working with Congressman Barney Frank to develop a plan that aims to rein in the 40 percent increase in Pentagon spending since 2001 that is not related to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The Joint committee is sorting through a large stack of policy proposals that have been well vetted and well reasoned for years."

  • Assemblyman Gusciora Opinion: Where has all the PILOT gone?
