The NJDSC Week In Review For August 19, 2011

retweetthis.png

Welcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

Weekend Watching

  • Chairman Wisniewski will appear on News 12's Power and Politics this weekend to Christie's toll hikes and the downgrade of our credit rating. Check your local listings for viewing times in your area.

Christie's Toll Hike Follows Familiar trans-Hudson Dance

  • Chairman Wisniewski discussed Christie's toll hike on the John Gambling show. (Audio)
  • WSJ on Christie's toll hike plan: The new proposal comes after a familiar trans-Hudson dance that often takes place at the Port Authority. First, the Port Authority proposed a larger-than-expected increase. Next, the two governors who control the agency expressed outrage and dismay. Then the governors propose a much lower increase—a figure much closer to what the Port Authority had been considering internally for the past year.
  • Senator Menendez asserted that Governor Chris Christie should veto the proposed toll hike. He also wants the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey to undergo and independent audit to show why these proposed toll hikes are supposedly necessary.
  • Senator Turner called for a freeze in toll hikes: "The increase, which would largely impact low and middle income commuters from the area employed in and around New York City, is unaffordable. Additionally, the toll increase for truckers will be ultimately passed on to consumers, as the cost of transport of consumer goods, such as food and clothes, will increase in lockstep with the toll hikes."
  • Doblin: This is not the time to further tax commuters and commercial truckers. And call it what you will Governor Christie, these hikes are user taxes. They are the most regressive of taxes because they impact low-income commuters most.
  • Mulshine: Come on, Chris, tell the truth: You just raised taxes.
  • The Record: In all, the authority estimates 122 million vehicles will pay tolls to cross its six bridges and tunnels in 2011. The George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels handle the overwhelming majority of those trips: about 53 million, 21 million and 17 million, respectively. More than one in five weekday drivers who cross the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels is from Bergen County, according to agency data. And New Jersey motorists make up 52 percent of toll payers on those crossings, while New Yorkers make up 42 percent. New Jersey voters opposed raising tolls, no matter what the economic conditions, by a 54 to 41 percent margin in a poll released by Quinnipiac University on Thursday.
  • Star Ledger: Some observers suggested the announcement and the governors’ responses, including today’s agreement, were all part of an orchestrated scheme intended to provide the governors with political cover from commuters’ anger over the increase, while still providing additional revenues to the Port Authority to help pay for projects the governors support. “The deal sounds like better news, compared with $4, but we are still looking at $9.50,” said State Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, a Democrat from Bergen County. “I still think it’s an insult for commuters to be expected to believe that it was going to be $4, and now its down to $1.50. Those numbers were probably fantasy to start with.”
  • ConservativeNewJersey.com: This would be only a 56% increase! Now that is really easing our pain!

After Christie takes away cap, tuition at NJ Colleges as much as 7.2%

  • Press of Atlantic City: Undergraduate tuition and fees at the state’s 10 public colleges will increase an average of 4 percent for the 2011-12 academic year, data compiled by The Press of Atlantic City show. With no state legislative cap on tuition this year, the increases range from 1.6 percent at Rutgers University to 7.2 percent at New Jersey City University. Paul Shelly, spokesman for the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities, said reductions in state aid over the last several years have put more pressure on the colleges to raise tuition.

"The Christie Downgrade": Governor sends staff to argue for NJ’s financial future

  • Chairman Wisniewski on Christie sending surrogates to meet with the ratings agencies as a substitute for himself: “The most important job of any governor is ensuring the financial stability of the state,” said Wisniewski. “While the governor can travel around the country campaigning for his Republican pals, spend days holed up leading a failed Republican redistricting effort and can even helicopter across the state for meetings with Iowa admirers, I’m shocked he couldn’t make the trip to Manhattan to argue for our financial well-being."
  • The Record: Fitch lowers NJ general bond rating from 'AA' to 'AA-'.
  • Daily Record: Christie sent surrogates to speak with the ratings agencies instead of going himself.
  • Senator Lesniak: “Gov. Christie has refused to take action to bring long-term job growth and economic vitality back to New Jersey’s economy. He’s made some quick fixes, but his administration has not made job growth a priority that brings revenue growth and fiscal stability.”
  • Business Insider: Chris Christie For President Is DOA As New Jersey Just Got Its Credit Rating Downgraded.
  • AP: Fitch is 3rd rating agency to downgrade NJ bonds in the last year under Christie.

Wisniewski Goes on Offense on Obama's Behalf

  • ‎Chairman Wisniewski at PolitickerNJ on the GOP field: "The Republican Party's normal is being set by the Tea Party. I believe Gov. Perry stated it was not unconstitutional to secede from the union. This is the guy who wants to be president of all the United States. That's like having Jefferson Davis step in for Abe Lincoln. No thanks. I don't think that party has a lot to offer other than blind rage at the President." As for Obama's response during the debt crisis, "The President did have a four trillion proposal, and then (Speaker John) Boehner got his head handed to him by the Republican Tea Party zealots."
  • More Wisniewski on Christie attacking the President: "That's the obscenity of Chris Christie: demean and devolve the debate into a food fight. I didn't get into government to speak down to people or to call people names, and as difficult a task as that is to resist when you have the Tea Party still denying the president's birth certificate, we ought to give the president credit for trying to raise the level of debate in this country."

NJDSC Women's Equality Event

  • Please join the New Jersey Democratic State Committee for our 3rd Annual Women’s Equality Event honoring County Chairs Charlotte DeFilippo, Liz Muoio, Peg Schaffer and Lois Zarish with special guest, Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz at the home of Marcia Marley on Thursday, August 25th from 6 to 8 pm. Warren Buffett calls for true Shared Sacrifice

  • Warren Buffett says its time for government to get serious about shared sacrifice: Stop Coddling the Super-Rich.
  • President Obama on Warren Buffett calling for government to get serious about shared sacrifice: “He said we’ve got to stop coddling billionaires, That’s what Warren Buffett said. He pointed out that he pays a lower tax rate than anybody in his office, including the secretary. He figured out that his tax bill, he paid about 17 percent. And the reason is because most of his wealth comes from capital gains.”
  • Blue Jersey: Warren Buffett rebukes Chris Christie.
  • Philadelphia Inquirer: Buffett’s call on taxes falls on deaf ear.

Christie's Double Standard

  • Christie's Double Standard: "I’M SORRY, governor. But you can’t have it both ways. You have been in office for more than a year and a half. And you can no longer get away with blaming the sad state of affairs on your predecessors while claiming credit if the sun rises on the Garden State."

Over 80 women attend the NJDSC STEP-UP Training

  • Over 80 women attended the 5th Annual STEP-UP Democratic Women's Advanced Training in New Brunswick. You can see a photo of the participants below:

Judge Rejects Tea Party Challenge to Legislative Map

  • PolitickerNJ: Judge dismisses tea party's request for injunction on new legislative map.
  • Star Ledger: A superior court judge today refused to stop the state from using the newly adopted legislative district map while a tea party group challenges its constitutionality. Judge Linda Feinberg also said she’s likely to grant a motion by the state and the commission that redrew the state’s legislative districts to toss the lawsuit, but will not make an official ruling until late next week.
  • Chairman Wisniewski: “We are pleased that the court denied the Bayshore Tea Party’s request for an injunction. It is evident that Judge Feinberg understands the issues in this case from her insightful questions at this hearing. As we have said from the start, we remain confident that the map the majority of the Commission adopted will withstand this Tea Party challenge because it satisfies all Constitutional requirements including the ‘one person, one vote’ mandate.”

Congressional Corner

  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez announced the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $4,533,100 to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for projects through the Federal Highway Administration.
  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez announced the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded nearly $2 million to local New Jersey airports for safety improvements and to increase capacity.
  • Senator Lautenberg and Congressman Pallone were in Belmar Wednesday to introduce the Clean Coastal Environment and Public Health Act of 2011. The legislation would reauthorize and improve the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act, which was written by Lautenberg and Pallone in 2000.
  • South Jersey hospitals can relax now that there has been a successful push by federal lawmakers to extend a provision for the Garden State that keeps Medicare reimbursements on par with nearby urban healthcare providers. The provision, tailor-made for the Garden State, was set to run out next month. But legislators, including Congressman Andrews and Senator Menendez, worked with the White House and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to get the provision extended to 2013.
  • ‎Senator Menendez got a tour of the Surgical Pavilion at Shore Memorial Hospital and offered his support of the project and the ongoing effort for veterans to receive care there.
  • Congressman Holt wrote an opinion piece calling for support of funding for military suicide prevention.
  • Continuing in his commitment to supporting small businesses and infrastructural renewal, Congressman Pascrell announced a $847,860 federal grant for the redevelopment of the Bloomfield Central Business District.
  • Congressman Rothman reminded seniors to check if they qualify for lower prescription drug prices.
  • Congressman Andrews announced $300,000 in federal grant money for job training in Camden that will create 72 green jobs.  The grant comes from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training Grants Program, and was awarded to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) through an annual grant competition.
  • Congressman Rush Holt toured several manufacturers in Tinton Falls and Eatontown Thursday to get ideas from managers and workers on ways to keep the companies in New Jersey and create new jobs.
  • Congressman Payne spoke with Vermont Public Radio about a bipartisan congressional committee is calling for more U.S. dollars to be sent to Somalia. (Audio)

  • Senator Smith and Assemblyman John Mckeon said they will be sponsoring legislation to help foster consistency, deal with some of the issues that are not addressed in the plan and to change the alternative energy goal.
  • Legislation that will allow taxpayers to make voluntary contributions on their income tax returns to provide support to our state’s National Guard members and their families has been signed into law.

The NJDSC Week In Review For August 12, 2011

retweetthis.png

Welcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

The Jury Is No Longer Out

  • Chairman Wisniewski Op-Ed: The jury is no longer out. The cut and hope policies of the current crop of tea party conservatives simply doesn't work in the real world, and neither does their delay and obfuscate strategy for derailing the Obama Administration. The recent downgrade of America's sovereign debt should serve both as evidence of this, and warning for future fiscal cycles. Republicans can stomp their feet and scream their ideology all they want, but facts are stubborn things. The fact is that America cannot cut its way out of debt. It must use a balanced approach that prioritizes our spending, controls runaway expenses, and enhances our ability to pay our bills. That isn't my conclusion: it's what Standard and Poor's told us.
  • Senator Menendez Opinion: An unfair deal for middle-class families.
  • Politico: A Standard & Poor’s director said for the first time Thursday that one reason the United States lost its triple-A credit rating was that several lawmakers expressed skepticism about the serious consequences of a credit default — a position put forth by some Republicans.
  • Talking Points Memo: Who’s Really Responsible For U.S. Debt Downgrade.

Christie's Healthcare Hypocrisy Tour

  • The Bray: Christie's Healthcare Hypocrisy Tour.
  • NJ Assembly Democrats: Gov. Christie's health care record - a quick review as he signs a proclamation.
  • Senator Weinberg blasted Governor Christie’s ceremonial signing of a National Health Center Week proclamation in Burlington City, saying that women deserve access to health care, not meaningless proclamations.
  • Assemblywoman Stender: Nothing epitomizes the governor’s out-of-touch, let-them-eat-cake attitude than his signing a proclamation on health centers after he’s spent 20 months restricting access to health care for women, senior and disabled citizens and working families.

Little Progress on Property Taxes Under Christie As Homeowners are Frustrated

  • ‎A Monmouth University poll released Friday showed 49% of residents believe the state has made a little progress on property taxes.
  • Asbury Park Press: New Jersey homeowners are frustrated over steep hikes in their tax bills.
  • Editorial: "Christie says he will never sign tax increase on the wealthy. And w/ his GOP bobbleheads in Legislature afraid to challenge him on anything, his vetoes will stick. But if you're angry about the budget cuts he’s imposed, you should know it didn’t have to be this bad. The governor & Republican legislators are protecting the wealthy from sharing in the sacrifice. And that makes it harder on everyone else."
  • Q&A: Policy expert on tax flight myth.

Christie claims no knowledge of Toll Hikes as Communters Face Long Delays

  • Star Ledger: Gov. Chris Christie won't rule out toll hikes on Port Authority bridges and tunnels.
  • Source: Christie, Cuomo knew to expect toll hike proposal.
  • Chairman Wisniewski on Christie trying to act surprised by the proposed toll hikes: "You don’t have to be a PhD in gubernatorial politics," to decipher the plot. "The people appointed to the Port Authority by Gov. Christie kept him in the dark? Is he calling for their resignation?"
  • Former NY Gov. David Paterson lambasted New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for saying he had no idea in advance that the Port Authority was going to seek significant toll hikes.
  • The Record's Charlie Stile on Twitter: Does PA need to build new span to stretch across @GovChristie's credibility gap?
  • The Record: Port Authority's proposed toll hikes raise hackles.
  • Senator Menendez called for an audit of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the wake of last week's proposal to hike bridge and tunnel tolls by $4 and raise PATH fares $1. More Menendez: “I think it is time to call for an audit of the Port Authority and look at all of the budget and look at whether or not this is an agency that is operating efficiently. Those hikes as they are proposed . . . are unacceptable.”
  • Chairman Wisniewski on NJ Transit delays: "A second rail tunnel under the Hudson River to Manhattan would have been able to absorb the chaos caused by Tuesday’s derailment with minimal effect on transit users. And it would have helped take much of the burden off of the century-old North Jersey Corridor line. Instead, the governor chose to put politics over policy, losing $3 billion in federal dollars promised to the state, forgoing thousands of temporary and full-time jobs and forcing commuters and transit users to continue to pay more for less reliable and less frequent service."
  • Senator Lautenberg on NJ Transit Delays: "Unfortunately, these delays are only going to become more commonplace in the future as a result of Governor Christie's cancellation of the ARC tunnel project, which would have included another two tracks under the Hudson River to relieve congestion and prevent disruptions for New Jersey commuters. The existing tunnel is over a century old and not capable of handling the increased traffic we will see in the future.  Instead of accepting $3 billion in federal funding for New Jersey to advance the ARC project, the Governor turned down the money and settled for the status quo – leaving New Jersey commuters and our economy to suffer."
  • Star Ledger Editorial: On toll hike, N.J. Gov. Chris Christie is playing commuters.
  • The Record Editorial: Untimely tolls.
  • New Jersey Newsroom: Port Authority toll hike exposes Christie as a flip-flopper.
  • Mulshine: Looks like Christie's going to break that no-tax-hike promise.
  • Tri-State Transportation Campaign: New Jersey’s Shrinking Commitment to Transit.

Christie's Energy Plan a Step Backwards

  • Atlantic City Press: Critics say Gov. Chris Christie's 2011 Energy Master Plan will have the opposite effect than what is intended.
  • The Daily Record: Christie gets 'F' on Highlands.
  • Commentary: N.J. Gov. Chris Christie weakening water protections.

NJDSC Women's Equality Event

  • Please join the New Jersey Democratic State Committee for our 3rd Annual Women’s Equality Event honoring County Chairs Charlotte DeFilippo, Elizabeth Muoio, Marguerite Schaffer and Lois Zarish at the home of Marcia Marley on Thursday, August 25th from 6 to 8 pm. Census Data Reveals Further Population changes

  • WNYC: The number of same-sex couples who call New Jersey home increased significantly over the last 10 years, according to the latest census figures. There are 24,112 same-sex couples living in New Jersey — a 45 percent increase from 2000, according to the 2010 Census. By comparison, New York City has 32,972 same-sex couples. The census also revealed that the Asian population grew by nearly half — by 275,862, or 52 percent. Nearly half that growth came from the Asian Indian community, which added 130,353 people, a 72 percent increase from 2000. The state's Chinese population grew by 35 percent, or 36,470, while the Korean and Filipino count each grew by a little over 31,000. The state’s Latino population grew by 39 percent. The greatest demographic shift, among Latinos, took place within the state's Mexican community, which added another 114,786 residents, more than doubling its numbers. That makes it half the size of the state's Puerto Rican population, which is 434,092.
  • Garden State Equality noted the “stunning 45 percent increase” in the number of same-sex couples living in New Jersey since the 2000 Census.  They released the top 83 municipalities in New Jersey ranked by the number of Garden State Equality members and chose 83 as symbolic of just having surpassed 83,000 members.

Congressional Corner

  • Senator Lautenberg, Senator Menendez, Congressman Pallone and Congressman Holt slammed the Defense Department decision to close Ft. Monmouth commissary.
  • Senator Lautenberg and Senator Menendez unveiled a new video calling on Americans to come together as a nation at 1 p.m. on September 11, 2011 to memorialize the September 11th terrorist attacks across the country, at the same time, w/ one minute of reflection marked by the ringing of bells, sounding of sirens & other actions to remember the lives lost that day.
  • U.S. Senator Menendez and State Senator Whelan convened on the future site of the NextGen Aviation Research and Technology Park today to urge stable funding of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and denounce the recent deadlock in Washington, D.C. that left 4,000 FAA employees, including 640 working locally, on furlough and without pay.
  • During National Health Center Week, Senators Lautenberg and Menendez announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $816,667 to New Jersey’s Zufall Health Center.  The funding, made available through the Health Care Reform Law, will be used to open a new satellite facility in Hackettstown to provide free or low-cost health care services to low-income community members.

  • Congressman Sires opposes closing the Post Office Branch on West Side Avenue and Union Street in Jersey City.

  • Congressman Rothman inserted a speech into the Congressional Record last month noting the Prudential Center in Newark, the Izod Center in East Rutherford and the New Meadowlands Stadium are suitable venues for the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

The NJDSC Week in Review for August 5, 2011

retweetthis.pngWelcome to the latest installment of the NJDSC's week in review.  Here's a look back at some of the news from this past week and toward the end, some of the upcoming events around the state next week:

Breakdown How the Governor's Budget Veto Hurt School Districts

  • NJ Spotlight: Senate Democrats launch website that takes the measure of state aid under the Christie administration.
  • Chairman Wisniewski congratulated Senate President Sweeney on holding the Governor accountable for his cruel cuts to education funding with the launch of the new NJ Senate Democrats Education Funding Website. From the website:While Governor Christie likes to point out that many school districts have received more aid this year than last year, he's only telling you part of  the story. In many cases, districts have lost millions in State support since Governor Christie came into office, and few have been funded at the level required under the school funding formula approved in 2008.
  • Education Law Center: When Governor Christie took his red pen to the Democrats’ FY12 State Budget, he removed full funding of the state school aid formula for the 2011-12 school year. As a result, 550 districts are now off-formula for the second straight year. While compelled by the NJ Supreme Court to fully fund the Abbott districts under the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA), the governor vetoed most of the additional aid the Democrats’ budget allocated to non-Abbott districts. The bulk of the additional school aid would have gone to mostly moderate- and middle-income districts in suburban and rural areas of the state -- districts that have repeatedly been denied the funding they are entitled to under the SFRA. The final budget provides only a small increase over 2010-11 aid levels: approximately 2% of each district’s 2009-10 total budget. This is far below the amount cut in 2010-11, and provides no increase to move districts towards adequacy, as required under the SFRA.

Christie's Charm Offensive Won't Work On Seniors

  • Star Ledger Editorial: "Seniors are smart. They know they were better off before he was elected. They know Christie's property tax relief cuts have made it tougher for them to stay in their homes, that he has protected millionaires over fixed-income residents. And they won't be fooled by the charm. Because with age comes wisdom."
  • The Bray: Christie's Charm Offensive Won't Work on Seniors.

More Flights Revealed in Coptergate

Christie's Claims that Democrats Cut MVC Deemed FALSE

  • Politifact: PolitiFact New Jersey found that Christie was wrong about the budget cut -- nearly seven times wrong. In the wake of computer problems at Motor Vehicle Commission offices and other state agencies, Christie claimed the Democrats had cut $35 million for Information Technology improvements. We rate the statement False.
  • Chairman of the Assembly Transporation Committee Wisniewski reacted to Christie's claims: "There's more than enough money that the MVC generates every year to fund all of their technology needs so it's just a non-starter to say that we don't have the money..."
  • Following a hearing on the MVC delays, Senator Gordon said: “I did not hear anything that would allay the concerns of the MVC customer having to go tomorrow and not having to stand in a long line. I didn’t hear anything that would suggest that there will be an immediate fix to this. I heard about things that will be in place in September.” Gordon said he found it “hard to believe” that the $179 million the Christie administration had “diverted” from the agency’s coffers over the last two years did not have an impact on operations.
  • Senator Sarlo: "I don't know about all of you, but I have had no complaints from DMV until the last two years, until some of the significant budget cuts occurred. DMV was cleaned up."
  • Assemblyman Greenwald on Christie raiding motor vehicle funding: "If the Governor had wanted MVC to have additional funding for technology investments, he would have simply reduced the amount of the raid, rather than increasing it."
  • Assemblywoman Wagner: “Motorists across this state had become accustomed to brutal waits at motor vehicle agencies, until the reforms of decade ago changed that reality. Now, motor vehicle agencies are again a mess under Governor Christie."

NJDSC Women's StepUp training and Women's Equality Event

  • If you haven't signed up yet for this intensive, interactive one-day training for women with some of our region's leading political strategists, space is going fast. The New Jersey Democratic State Committee is proud to present our 5th Annual STEP-UP Democratic Women's Advanced Training on Saturday, August 13, 2011. StepUpNJ@njdems.org for more information.
You can view the full invitation here.

Study: Taxes Don't Make NJ Millionaires Flee

  • Star Ledger: In each of the last two years, Gov. Chris Christie has vetoed Democratic bills to raise taxes on incomes over $1 million, saying it would drive wealthy people from the state. As it turns out, this is another suspect piece of conservative dogma. A new study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities deals several body blows to the governor’s theory.
  • New Jersey Newsroom: In the study, sociologists at Stanford University looked at the effect of New Jersey's 2004 tax increase on people making more than $500,000 per year. They found that while the number of people leaving the state in this income group increased very slightly after the tax increase went into effect, the number was insignificant because people unaffected by the new tax were moving at a similar rate. The end result was that the new tax rate produced a large increase in revenue for the state without prompting people to leave.

The Safety Net Unravels

  • The Record Editorial on Christie's Legal aid cuts: When one social-services thread after another is pulled out, the safety net unravels. While top-tier earners are saved from any tax increases, those at the bottom are left with nowhere to turn. The message they get from the state is, "We don’t care."

Letter Raises Questions about Christie cuts to Wynona's House

  • AP: A letter sent to a Newark-based center for sexually abused children is calling into question whether New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie knew that federal funds were available to keep it from closing when he cut 75 percent of its state funding.

Debt Deal Reached To Avoid Default

  • PolitickerNJ: Lautenberg and Menendez among just six Senate Dems who voted against debt deal.
  • Chairman Wisniewski on the agreement to avoid default: “The hijacking of the Republican Party by the Tea Party, with their unwillingness to compromise, helped push our country to the brink of default, putting the economic future of our nation and many families in peril," said Wisniewski. "In causing the downgrade in America's bond rating, Tea Party members have shown that their top priority is holding our country hostage to their extreme ideology. The Republicans have shown once again that their preaching of shared sacrifice is nothing more than a talking point they are unwilling to practice. The cost to our national credibility is not something the world markets will soon forget. With unemployment in NJ at 9.5%, attention must now be turned to creating jobs and putting New Jerseyans back to work.”
  • Congressman Pallone at Blue Jersey: Why I voted against the debt bill.
  • Congressman Holt at the State Column: “As poor as this deal is on its merits, I am even more troubled by the precedent it sets. The Tea Party and their enablers have, by taking the American economy hostage, transformed a routine budgetary authorization into the most dramatic reshaping of government in decades. Today’s deal establishes that government-by-hostage-negotiation is a legitimate, effective way to achieve one’s political ends. I am frightened by what this means for the future of our democracy.”
  • Congressman Payne:  “While I understand that failure to raise the debt ceiling would have been catastrophic to our country, I do not agree that spending cuts alone is the answer. As we continue to debate ways to cut spending in order to reduce the deficit, we have to take a moment and think about the real impact this will have on our seniors, children, working families and other vulnerable communities. It is unconscionable to believe that my Republican colleagues can turn their heads to the fact that a large segment of our population continues to suffer because the wealthy refuses to share the sacrifices.”
  • Congressman Rothman: "The extreme right wing of the Republican Party has held our nation hostage, threatening catastrophic default while demanding savage cuts to Social Security, Medicare, student loans and other vital programs. They were unwilling to impose even a single penny of shared responsibility on Big Oil or corporations that are making record profits and paying little or nothing in taxes, and those Americans making millions and billions in income each year, who are enjoying their tenth year of tax cuts. As angry as I am at the right-wing Republican extremists for holding our country hostage to their ideology that demands the destruction of our nation’s social safety net, supporting this deal is the only responsible choice I can make.”
  • Congressman Pascrell: "Voting for this legislation was the right thing to do, but it wasn't the easy thing to do. We cannot plunge the country into further economic chaos. Interest rates are high enough, not only for constituents in my district but throughout the country.
  • Congressman Sires: “While this plan is not perfect, it is necessary in order to remove the cloud of uncertainty over our economy at this critical time.”
  • Video: Senator Menendez took to the floor to call out Republican's deliberate obstruction of the debt negotiations. He emphasized the need for Republicans to realize that governing is not about falling on your sword for unattainable partisan political goals, but about sensible compromise to solve problems for the American people.

“It’s another form of taxation”

  • Star Ledger: After years of steady declines, New Jersey’s notoriously high auto insurance rates are on the rise again. And, to stem the tide, the Christie administration is proposing new rules that would limit the kinds of medical care injured drivers can receive under their auto policies. Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, director of the advocacy group New Jersey Citizen Action, said the changes would hurt motorists. “It’s just another hit at the consumer,” she said. “It’s another form of taxation.”

Congressional Corner

  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez said that a deal brokered by Senate Democrats will reopen the FAA & put hundreds of New Jerseyans back on the job.
  • Senators Lautenberg and Menendez applauded Secretary Ray LaHood on a $4.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of the National Transit Institute (NTI) at Rutgers.  Since 1991, NTI has served as the premiere research, training, and educational institute in the country dedicated to public transportation.  This award will enable critical enhancements to NTI’s ongoing work, including safety and security training, procurement, planning and advanced technologies. Congressman Pallone also praised the grants.
  • Senator Lautenberg announced the Senate unanimously approved his resolution to designate September 2011 as Campus Fire Safety Month.  Earlier this year, Lautenberg co-sponsored the Campus Fire Safety Education Act with Congressman Pascrell. That bill provides for competitive grants that colleges can apply for to start or grow fire safety education programs.
  • NJBiz: Senator Menendez said 37 New Jersey hospitals will receive a supplemental $88 million from Medicare in 2012 as a result of an effort he led on behalf of the state's congressional delegation to retain a Medicare rule that recognizes the cost of operating hospitals in all urban states where there is no designated rural hospital.
  • Senator Lautenberg applauded the new Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) guidelines requiring health insurance plans to cover women’s preventive services, including birth control, without charging a copay.
  • Video: Senator Menendez on the need to focus on creating jobs.
  • Congressman Pallone has introduced a resolution in the US House of Representatives, condemning the extremist violence against the Kashmiri Pandits since 1989.  The resolution condemns the extremist violence, lack of religious freedom, and human rights violations committed against Kashmiri Pandits, which they have endured for more than two decades.
  • The Record Editorial praised Congressman Pascrell for his push for fair compensation of ground zero first responders.
  • A bill to honor the late Marine Sergeant Matthew J. Fenton, introduced by Congressman Rothman, passed the House of Representatives by a voice vote.  The entire New Jersey Congressional delegation joined Congressman Rothman as cosponsors.
  • Congressman Payne endorsed President Obama’s new Presidential initiative directing a comprehensive review to strengthen the United States’ ability to prevent mass atrocities.
  • Congressman Andrews tweeted: #GOP wants more cuts in exchange for unemployment benefits ext 4 #MiddleClass-Looks like another hostage situation.

Under the Dome

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3466/3301686785_f01743db35_m.jpgLegislation to allocate voter-approved open-space preservation funding for recreational development and conservation projects was signed into law. The three-bill package spends $156.3 million on green space preservation. The funding will be divided into $84.5 million in grants for municipalities and county governments to buy green space, $14.8 million for non-profit groups to buy land and $57 million for the state to purchase land. The funding will be used to purchase parks, fields and farmland as well as for land buys near Barnegat Bay and in the Highlands. The state portion will include expanding parks, forest and wildlife areas and will also be used to purchase land in flood-prone areas.
  • Legislators hailed approval of funds to deliver cleaner, safer drinking water. The bipartisan legislation will make $400 million available for projects that clean up water used for fishing and swimming. An additional $250 million will be available for drinking water projects. Cities, counties and utilities across the state already have submitted more than 170 applications.
  • NJ 101.5: Assemblywoman Wagner is sponsoring a bill she's calling the, "Retaining Our Best and Brightest Loan Redemption Program." It is designed to offer incentives to encourage academically successful graduates of New Jersey colleges and universities to remain in the State upon graduation, and to academically successful New Jersey residents who attend out-of-State colleges and universities to return to the State upon graduation.
  • Support for the Consumer Credit Fairness Act.
  • Senator Van Drew praised the NJ Turnpike authority for sending “the top people” to a public information session at Stockton State College and said the session answered a good number of his questions, including that reforestation would take place and by providing tree-related accident statistics.
  • Assemblyman Chivukula continues to promote renewable energy efforts.
  • Senator Smith and Assemblyman McKeon joined a coalition of environmental groups gathered outside the Highlands Council’s offices to mark the seventh anniversary of the Highlands Act’s passage.
  • Senator Madden commended a South Jersey researcher for their medical breakthrough in Alzheimer's Disease.
  • Senator Rice said that the inability of the Newark School Advisory Board to conduct any business without the consent of the state’s Acting Commission of Education has disenfranchised local voters, who now are subject to “property taxation without representation.”
  • Video: Assemblyman McKeon discussed his legislation to clarify the need for New Jersey to continue to participate in the 10-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), despite actions from Gov. Christie and the Executive Branch seeking to withdraw from the multi-state coalition.
  • Assemblywoman Wagner cited a recent legislative audit of the State Office of Management and Budget as further evidence for the need to act on her legislation to institute paperless payrolls for all public employees and retirees, a move that would provide substantial savings for taxpayers.
  • Under current law, the State of New Jersey withholds lottery winnings from parents who are behind in child support payments. A new bill would amends the existing procedure regarding annuity jackpot winnings to expand its application to casino and racetrack winnings. The measure's sponsor calls it a matter of fairness.
